Opposition parties formalized this Tuesday their support for the diplomat's unitary candidacy Edmundo González Urrutia to confront the president Nicolas Maduro in the elections on July 28 in Venezuelaon the brink of expiration of the deadline for the procedure, amid complaints of obstacles.
A New Time (UNT) supported the candidacy of González Urrutia, nominated by the main opposition alliance, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), instead of Maria Corina Machadofavorite in the polls but disqualified from holding public office.
UNT had applied to Manuel Rosalesold rival of the deceased Hugo Chavezwhich was registered at the last minute as a unitary option but was not widely accepted.
Representatives of that party reported on the social network
González Urrutia, 74, was not the first choice of the Unitary Platform, but the academic Corina Yoris, named by Machado as his successor. The diplomat, in fact, was registered for the races after the platform was blocked to prevent Yoris's application.
His candidacy was initially provisional until a consensus name was sought, but it was ratified on Friday by the PUD.
UNT and MPV had denounced blockades to formalize their support for González Urrutia. The deadline for changes to nominations on the electoral ballots expired last Saturday, but the CNE extended it for 72 hours.
“We are united by the great challenge of recovering Venezuela and advancing a transition to definitive freedom. That is the desire and mandate of millions of citizens who demand change,” González Urrutia expressed this Tuesday in X.
