At least one person has died and several others were injured after a magnitude 6.0 earthquake that shook the north of the Indonesian island from Sumatra this Saturday, official sources reported.
The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) said in a statement that the earthquake occurred in the northern region of Tapanuli province, in North Sumatra, and left at least one dead.
Likewise, the authorities reported that “several residents have suffered head injuries and are receiving intensive care,” although the exact number of injured is unknown at the moment.
The magnitude 6.0 earthquake occurred at 2:28 p.m. local time (7:28 p.m. Friday GMT) at a depth of 10 kilometers and, according to ‘BMKG’, “it had no potential for a tsunami.”
For its part, the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which records seismic activity throughout the world, estimated the magnitude of the earthquake at 5.8 and placed its epicenter at a depth of 13 kilometers.
According to the Indonesian authorities, after the initial earthquake there were several aftershocks, of magnitudes between 5.0 and 5.1, which were felt “moderate to strong for three to five seconds” in various locations, which led to a wave of “panic” among the residents.

The series of tremors caused “people to panic and run out of their houses. Shortly after the earthquake, the electricity went out”noted BMKG.
In photos and videos released by the emergency services, several injured people can be seen receiving medical attention, and various material damage to buildings, infrastructure and homes, the extent of which is still being evaluated by the authorities.
Indonesia sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of great seismic and volcanic activity in which about 7,000 earthquakes are recorded each year, most of them moderate.
