The Argentine government accused the head of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, of “meddling” after criticism for the closure of the Ministry of Women during the administration of Argentine president Javier Milei, worsening the crisis in the countries’ bilateral relations.
During a rally last Friday (7), the last day of the election campaign for the European Parliament, Sánchez declared that despite the elimination of the Ministry of Women, “the feminist cause is much more powerful than what Milei can do”.
Members of the Argentine government responded to the president of the Spanish government. On Saturday (8), Milei shared the post of the Undersecretary of the Press, Javier Lanari, with attacks on left-wing organizations. “To harm is to dismember a woman, give her to the pigs and blame the victim. To do harm is to exchange plans for sex. All this happened with the Ministry of Women, Inadi, Nodio and dozens of militant organizations,” Lanari posted on the X social network.
On Thursday (6), the Argentine government announced the closure of the ministry to fulfill the electoral promise of reducing the size of the State and considering that the ministry “was created and used” for “partisan political purposes” by the administration of the former -president Alberto Fernández (2019-2023).
The Minister of Security, Patricia Bullrich, also refuted Pedro Sánchez’s statement and criticized the Spanish “intrusion” with the withdrawal of the embassy from the capital Buenos Aires. In May, Milei did not agree to apologize to the Spanish government following criticism of the Sánchez government at the Spanish right-wing party Vox’s annual convention in Madrid, where she called Sánchez’s wife, Begoña Gómez, “corrupt.”
On the other hand, the Argentine government wanted the Spanish authorities to apologize for calling Milei a “hater”, “denier”, “substance abuser”, “authoritarian”, “anti-democratic” and for being “a very bad person”.
In the last Argentine presidential election, Sánchez supported former Peronist candidate and then Economy Minister Sergio Massa and did not send greetings to Milei after his victory at the polls in November 2023.
