The Ministry of Education (MEC) made official, today (2), its adhesion to the International Study of Trends in Mathematics and Science (TIMMS), an exam that will be applied to students in the 4th and 8th grades. According to Minister Victor Godoy, in addition to providing an insight into the situation of Brazilian education, the exam will help the country to recover lost learning during the pandemic.
By joining TIMMS, Brazil joins 60 other countries that also apply assessment in the areas of mathematics and science. “In that maxim of not managing what we don’t measure, we have made important advances to place Brazil in major international assessments,” said the minister during the exam accession ceremony.
“We will participate in this 8th edition next year, to better evaluate and understand education in Brazil and [para vermos] how we position ourselves in relation to other countries. We will not only evaluate the academic and professional path [dos estudantes]but the socio-cognitive development itself”, he said.
According to the minister, “they will be useful results for the government, schools and teachers that will help in the recovery of learning lost during the pandemic process”.
The exam will take place in four-year cycles, which will provide a basis for comparison on the progress achieved by students along this trajectory.
