At three in the afternoon, in the midst of very strong pressure to resign as leader of the PP, Pablo Casado had a conversation with one of his related leaders, in which he told him: “I don’t know why I have to go . I did nothing”. The president of the popular ones resisted at noon with his closest friends to resign, convinced that he could hold out until the national board of directors scheduled for next Tuesday and continue as party leader until the next congress that decides the leadership. Two sources from his direct team have also confirmed to EL PAÍS that Casado is not going to resign this Tuesday and they call tomorrow’s meeting with all the barons as the next important scenario. The situation is highly unstable and changing: those closest to him are also asking him to leave as soon as possible.
Casado has yielded to the growing pressure to convene an extraordinary congress. At the meeting of the National Board of Directors for next Tuesday, March 1, he will announce that call. The statutes of the PP establish that the extraordinary congresses “require a prior debate”, which must appear on the agenda of the Board of Directors. The minimum call period is a month and a half, but it can be reduced to just one month in advance if the causes of that urgency are justified. The ordinary congress of the PP was scheduled for next July.
The related leader with whom Casado has spoken at three in the afternoon has urged him to leave now, without waiting any longer, from the conviction that he will not be able to leave as president of the PP from the meeting that is scheduled tomorrow with the barons. This source also believes that “someone is making him think”, so his opinion could change. The truth is that until this noon it was not in Casado’s will to leave, as evidenced by this conversation in which the popular leader has insisted on his thesis, confirmed by other sources from his team, that he has acted in good faith and does not understand Why is he asked for such an immediate exit?
The pressure is intense for Casado to resign as soon as possible, after having been practically alone and cornered by a clamor in the PP to call an extraordinary congress and leave. A relevant popular baron aware of the negotiations with Casado assures that the consensus is to “set a date for the congress” and “close the dignified exit” of the popular leader, which is not closed. “The one he deems appropriate,” says this source. The important thing for the barons, led by Alberto Núñez Feijóo, president of Galicia and to whom everyone is looking to assume the leadership of the PP, is that Teodoro García Egea, general secretary of the popular party, release control of the organization as soon as possible. The options they are considering are to set up a manager or an organizing committee for the next congress. The details have to be discussed tomorrow at the meeting with the barons, scheduled for eight in the evening.
Casado’s steering committee, his nucleus of faithful, and the majority of the leadership of the popular parliamentary group demanded the immediate resignation of Teodoro García Egea as general secretary.
