Economist Marina Helena, pre-candidate of the Partido Novo for Mayor of São Paulo (SP), announced this Saturday, the 15th, her candidate for vice-mayor. Marina’s running mate will be Military Police Colonel Reynaldo Priell Neto. From 2019 to 2020, during the administration of former mayor Bruno Covas (PSDB), Priell Neto held the positions of chief of staff and deputy secretary in the municipal Public Security department.
“I ratify here my commitment for us to give this shock of order, management and freedom”, said the colonel after the announcement, made during the 8th National Meeting of the New. On social media, Marina Helena praised her running mate’s trajectory. “It is an honor for me to have as my vice-president one of the greatest Brazilian experts in police intelligence and public security,” wrote the pre-candidate. “We know that (São Paulo residents’) biggest concern is the crime that dominates the city.”
Priell Neto is a veteran colonel of the Military Police and has been with the corporation since 1987. He has a bachelor’s degree in Law, a master’s degree in Contract Law and a doctorate in Police Sciences. At PM, he previously headed the data processing division and the Information Technology department. From 2015 to 2017, he commanded the Military Police Advisory of the Legislative Assembly of the State of São Paulo (Alesp).
Janaína Paschoal was considered vice-president
During the first semester, one of the names mentioned to form Marina Helena’s ticket was former state deputy Janaina Paschoal, who publicly praised the Novo pre-candidate. According to Janaina, the alliance was indeed on the agenda, but it did not go ahead.
“Being Marina’s (Helena) deputy was a possibility. I maintain all the praise I gave her and will vote for her in the first round”, said the former parliamentarian to Estadão. In March, Janaína joined Progressistas, which makes up the political group linked to Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB), and admitted her chances of running for councilor in the capital of São Paulo.
Colonels as vice candidates
Priell Neto may not be the only PM colonel running for vice-mayor of São Paulo. The announcement of Colonel Ricardo Mello de Araújo for Nunes’ ticket, who will seek re-election, is getting closer and closer.
Mello is the favorite name to make up the mayor’s list as recommended by former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL). He is a former commander of Rota and former director of Ceagesp during Bolsonaro’s tenure in the federal government.
Yesterday, the 14th, Nunes received Mello, Bolsonaro and governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) for lunch. Upon leaving the meeting, the mayor stated that the vice’s name should be formalized next week.
