French police went to the Iranian consulate in Paris on Friday, April 19 after “a witness saw a man enter the building carrying a grenade or an explosive vest,” the Police Prefecture (PP) reported. The man was arrested.
According to 'Europe 1', the man had taken refuge in a consulate building, carrying an explosive belt and threatening to immolate himself.
“The Prefect of Police, Laurent Nuñez, has mobilized the BRI, an elite police unit,” said the Prefecture, adding that the consulate had made a “request for intervention” to the PP.
“The man left the consulate and was controlled by the BRI (investigation and intervention brigade),” the Police Prefecture later announced.
The surroundings of the Iranian consulate, located on Avenue d'Iéna, in the 16th district of the capital, have been completely cordoned off and there is a large police force, according to an AFP journalist present at the scene.
Traffic on metro lines 9 and 6 that serve the Trocadero station, the closest to the Iranian consulate, has been interrupted, according to RATP in X.
