In a debate at Maybrit Illner, Armin Laschet confronts AfD leader Chrupalla. There are no consequences within the AfD as a result of the espionage affair.
Berlin – The AfD co-chair Tino Chrupalla is trying to keep his party's back in the espionage affair involving top candidate Maximilian Krah. In the ZDF talk show “Maybrit Illner”, the AfD politician discussed the events with Armin Laschet (CDU) and tried to wriggle out of responsibility. The mood didn't stay calm for long. When the Union's former candidate for chancellor addressed harsh words to Chrupalla, a heated debate broke out.
“Such conditions have never existed to this extent in the Federal Republic of Germany,” raged Laschet. He directly accused the AfD politician and remarked: “If you were as sure as you are here, you would have to say that I would send Krah on every talk show so that he could prove his innocence. Please don’t take us and the German people for fools!”
Espionage in the EU Parliament: AfD European top candidate Krah possibly involved
Previously stood an employee of the AfD politician Maximilian Krah is suspectedfor the Chinese government in EU-Spying on Parliament. The employee in question, Jian G., is currently in custody. Meanwhile, the AfD leadership does not seem to be drawing any conclusions from the affair. Krah remains the AfD's top candidate for the upcoming European elections, but is expected to take a back seat in the election campaign.
“Every day confirms this for me: There has to be a firewall here against people who betray the fundamental questions of our country,” Laschet further criticized the AfD politician. Meanwhile, Chrupalla tried to defend the actions of the AfD leadership. Even before the affair, the chairman had vehemently denied possible connections to Russia or China among AfD politicians.
Chrupalla blocks it – Krah remains the AfD's top candidate
“We will draw clear consequences if these things are confirmed against Mr. Krah and Mr. Bystron,” noted Chrupalla, visibly annoyed. Chrupalla did not explain exactly what consequences the party leadership would draw. Krah had initially assured the AfD leadership in writing that he was not involved in the espionage allegations.
The AfD MEP also does not see the need for such measures Mirror reported. Krah makes it clear that he sees no personal misconduct on his part. He therefore remains a member of the AfD and, even though the espionage allegations have not yet been fully resolved, remains the Alternative for Germany's top European candidate. (SiSchr)
