An investigation by the AP agency indicates that prisoners who work in US prisons are often deprived of protective measures, do not receive necessary training and are exposed to dangerous conditions. At Hickman’s Family Farm, one of the companies where inmates work, nearly 250 injuries were recorded from 2018 to 2022.
In some States, prisoners cannot be classified as employees. This distinction makes them ineligible for compensation, unable to join strikes, and penalized for refusing to work.
