A Spanish judge has summoned Begoña Gómez, wife of Spain’s prime minister, the socialist Pedro Sánchez, to testify as an investigator in a case about alleged corruption in the private sector and influence peddling.
The judge of the Court of Instruction number 41 in Madrid, Juan Carlos Peinado, summoned Begoña Gómez on July 5th.
The subpoena is part of the preliminary process investigating a series of public contracts awarded to companies owned by Juan Carlos Barrabés, professor of the master’s degree at the Complutense University, which Sánchez’s wife co-directs.
The judge opened a case against her for allegedly committing crimes of influence peddling and business corruption, following a complaint from the organization Mãos Limpas, which the Public Ministry asked to archive.
Magistrate Peinado has treated her as being investigated in the case since he opened the preliminary phase on April 16, as shown by resolutions contained in the case summary.
