At least four people are feared dead in the devastation caused by typhoon Nanmadol in Japan, reports news agency AFP. In addition, at least 115 people have been injured, 14 of them seriously.
According to a Japanese government spokesperson, two people have been confirmed dead and two people have been “found without signs of life”. The authorities are also looking for one person reported missing, the spokesperson told AFP.
It is one of the worst storms to hit Japan in years, the news agency Reuters and The Japan Times newspaper. High winds and heavy rains caused, for example, traffic disruptions even on Monday. The weakened storm moved to the northeastern coast of the country on Tuesday morning and headed for the Pacific Ocean.
Storm downed trees, shattered windows and brought a month’s worth of rain in just a day to parts of Miyazaki Prefecture, where two deaths were confirmed. In addition, mudslides and a collapsed bridge were reported in the prefecture.
More than 100,000 households were still without power on Tuesday, local energy company Kyūshū Electric Power said, according to The Japan Times. The electricity will be restored by Wednesday at the latest.
Typhoon Nanmadol made landfall near the city of Kagoshima on the island of Kyūshū in southern Japan on Sunday. On Monday, the storm moved to the island of Honshū. More than four million people were advised to seek shelter from the typhoon’s path.
Reuters said on Monday that Japan’s prime minister Fumio Kishida postponed his departure for the UN General Assembly in New York due to the storm.
“I postponed my scheduled departure from today to assess the damage caused by the typhoon and take all measures to remedy the situation,” Kishida said Monday evening, according to the Reuters news agency.
The Japan Times reported on Tuesday morningthat the Prime Minister had gone to New York.
IN JAPAN typhoon season is underway, and the country experiences about 20 typhoons a year. They regularly cause heavy rains, which in turn cause landslides and flash floods.
