The US State Department said in a statement, Friday: “The United States is deeply concerned about the continued escalation of ISIS attacks throughout Iraq, including the attack in Makhmour, which killed 10 Peshmerga and three civilians.”
Officials in the Iraqi Kurdistan region said that an attack by ISIS militants on a village in northern Iraq on Friday killed at least 13 people, including three villagers and ten Kurdish soldiers.
ISIS claimed responsibility for the bloody attack. The attack took place in Makhmour district, which is a major point of ISIS activity and witnesses regular attacks on Kurdish and Iraqi forces and often civilians.
Makhmour, a mountainous region, is located 70 kilometers southeast of Mosul and 60 kilometers southwest of Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan region.
The Prime Minister of Iraqi Kurdistan, Masrour Barzani, called for greater security cooperation with the Iraqi security forces to counter the activities of ISIS.
A statement issued by the Peshmerga said that ISIS militants attacked the village in the early hours of Friday morning, killing three residents.
The statement added that the Peshmerga forces intervened, which led to clashes that resulted in the death of at least seven of its soldiers.
Kurdish security officials and hospitals said the final death toll was at least 10 peshmerga soldiers and three villagers.
