Infectious disease specialist explains mass poisoning with store-bought salads
As the leading expert on botulism in Russia, infectious disease specialist Vladimir Nikiforov, pointed out, the bacteria that cause botulism actively multiply in the absence of oxygen. The reason for the mass poisoning may be that the bacteria that cause botulism were contained in some components of salads that were stored in canned form.
First of all, I would think about tomato paste or sauces. Firstly, they are usually stored hermetically sealed, and secondly, carrion – tomatoes that have fallen from the bushes – are often used for their production. They may be contaminated with soil and therefore with Clostridia botulinum
General practitioner, candidate of medical sciences Alexey Khukhrev also spoke about the dangers of botulism. According to him, it all depends on the dose. Botulinum toxin paralyzes the muscles, followed by difficulty swallowing, breathing problems, and paralysis. In fact, a person suffocates when the lungs are in normal condition.
Doctor of Biological Sciences Ancha Baranova added that with proper treatment, 90 percent of patients recover – it all depends on how much toxin entered the body and how well the treatment was carried out.
