NYT: different positions on the missile incident in Poland led to Zelensky’s quarrel with the West
Differences in assessing the incident with missiles in Poland have led to discord between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the West, declared columnist Carly Olson in his article for The New York Times (NYT).
This is a rare example of public controversy between Ukraine and its allies, including Washington.
According to him, the Ukrainian leader continues to insist that the country is not involved in what happened, which is at odds with the statements of the United States and NATO that the ammunition belongs to the Ukrainian air defense system.
Zelensky’s position
Earlier, Zelensky reacted to the fall of missiles on Polish territory by saying that the missiles were of Russian origin.
Today, something happened that we have been warning about for a long time. Terror is not limited to our state borders. Russian missiles hit Poland
He warned that the longer Russia feels impunity, the more threats there will be for everyone. Zelensky also addressed the citizens of Poland and said that Ukraine is ready to support them, because “terror will not break free people.”
Russia opposes itself to the world. Russia terrorizes us and everyone it can reach. We will do everything to stop her!
The Ukrainian leader called the incident in Poland a significant escalation and said that action must be taken.
“We don’t know everything 100 percent”
Later, Zelensky changed his mind about the emergency, noting that he did not know about the incident “100 percent.”
“I don’t know what happened this time, we don’t know 100 percent, I think the world doesn’t know 100 percent either. But I am sure that there was a Russian missile and that we used air defense missiles … But we must be fair and honest, until the investigation is completed, we cannot say what type of missile was the fragments of which fell on the territory of Poland, ”said politician.
The representative of the command of the Air Force of Ukraine, Yuriy Ignat, admitted that fragments of missiles of the Armed Forces of Ukraine could fall in Poland. He stated that during the Russian attack on Ukrainian infrastructure, “so many rockets were fired by both Russia and Ukraine that the rocket fragments that hit Poland could be of both Russian and Ukrainian origin.”

Biden was not convinced by the arguments of Kyiv
After Zelensky’s speech, US President Joe Biden said that the denial of Ukraine’s involvement in the fall of missiles in Poland is not a sufficient argument. He shared his position with the White House upon his return from a trip to Asia for the G20 summit.
This is not proof
Later, Biden said that the incident in Poland was the result of the Ukrainian air defense.
A similar opinion was expressed by the Polish President Andrzej Duda. He acknowledged that Warsaw has no evidence that it was a missile fired by the Russian side. At the same time, according to the president, there are many signs that it was a Ukrainian air defense missile.
