The Devils are eight points away from the playoffs.
Ice hockey NHL club New Jersey Devils fired on Monday to his head coach For Lindy Ruff. The 64-year-old Ruff managed to coach the Devils from the 2020-21 season.
The experienced pilot took the team to the second round of the playoffs last season. In the first round, the Devils beat the New York Rangers 4–3 in a seven-game series. At the end of the season, Ruff was nominated for the NHL's best coach award, but Boston won Jim Montgomery.
The success raised expectations for this season as well, but the going has been sticky. The Devils are eight points away from the last playoff spots. When there are a couple of dozen matches left in the regular season, it starts to be a rush to turn the course.
The Devils have been particularly weak at home. In the 32-team series, the Devils' home game scoring average is only the 26th best.
“I've said this before: we have passionate supporters. They want to see wins and our home balance is hurting. I feel that I am fully responsible for that,” Ruff said last weekend after the home loss.
Ruff has coached more than 1,700 regular season games in the NHL. He started his career already in the 1997–98 season as the head coach of the Buffalo Sabers and remained at the helm of the team until the 2012–13 season.
Devils announced that Ruffi will be replaced Travis Green. Green, who played 970 regular season games in his career, was previously the head coach of the Vancouver Canucks in 2017–22.
Green will become the head coach from the Devils assistant coach position.
