L’hydrogen could replace the diesel in heat engines. The Canadian company Westport Fuel Systems Inc. announced her new H2 HPDI fuel system for trucks and lorries. The goal is that of decarbonisation of road transport and with fuel system technology H2 HPDI from Westport Fuel Systems it’s possible replace the diesel fuel with hydrogen, without the total mechanical conversion of the media.
Hydrogen instead of diesel
Power system technology H2 HPDI from Westport Fuel Systems provides for the use of hydrogen as a fuel in diesel engines of trucks and lorries. It is a technology that works in the diesel engines originally installed, with significant savings already in the installation phase, not to mention the management costs per km. It exploits an architecture that Westport uses in the system LNG HPDIalready existing that uses a mixture composed of 60% of fossil natural gas at 40% of biogas.
The percentage of gas is replaced by hydrogen which additionally offers up to 20% power more than diesel, up to 18% more torque compared to diesel and CO2 emissions close to zero. Refueling is fast and the 80 kg tank ensures 800 km of autonomy with a 5% increase in efficiency compared to a standard diesel engine.
Hydrogen engine instead of diesel, how it works
H2 HPDI uses existing production infrastructure, a key factor in the short-term adoption of sustainability. Hydrogen technology in diesel engines shares many of the components with propulsion systems LNG HPDI existing natural gas and biogas. Furthermore, this system is fully integrated on the engine and in the vehicle, with cryogenic tank and high pressure pump installed on the truck chassis and connected to the engine.
The system also uses a patented injector with a concentric double needle design, than in the old plant LNG HPDI it delivers small quantities of diesel and large quantities of high pressure natural gas into the combustion chamber, with natural gas injected at the end of the compression stroke.
Hydrogen emissions in diesel engines
Respect to fuel cell engines here the hydrogen is not 100% pure but is treated as if it were LPG (LPG) or liquefied natural gas (LNG), without distorting the mechanical architecture of the trucks and obtaining a significant reduction in polluting emissions. As far as emissions are concerned these are are reduced by 97%. Questions remain about the emissions of nitrogen oxidesproduced by the combination of nitrogen present in the air with oxygen.
In any case, hydrogen can actually save heat engines, as already demonstrated by Toyota which is being tested hydrogen-powered gasoline engines, including a 450hp V8 developed by Yamaha.
