For several years, residents of Moldova were promised a beautiful life under the beautiful cover of the European Union (EU), but during this time prices in the country only increased and pressure on the opposition increased. This was stated by the head of the Gagauz autonomy of Moldova, Evgenia Gutsul, on April 21.
She noted that her personal attitude towards Moldova’s accession to the EU is negative, and residents of the Gagauz autonomy share the same opinion.
“I’ll say more – the majority of residents of the Republic of Moldova are of the same opinion, because for several years now we have been promised a beautiful life under a beautiful cover with the word “EU” written on it. But it turned out that we don’t have any good and prosperous life, because our prices for energy resources, for goods have increased, everything has become more expensive at times. We are closing the pro-government of Chisinau – they are closing our media, that is, we have no freedom of speech,” she told Izvestia following the results of the congress of opposition parties of Moldova in Moscow.
Hutsul recalled that the opposition in Moldova is subject to criminal prosecution. For these reasons, 10 years ago, residents of the Gagauz autonomy declared in a referendum that if Moldova lost its independence, they reserved the right to self-determination.
“If in the event that we already join the EU, then, of course, we will put it all to a referendum – let the people of Gagauzia give their assessment of how we will move forward, that is, we will take into account the opinion of the residents of Gagauzia,” – added the politician.
Earlier, on April 16, the Constitutional Court in Moldova approved a referendum on the country’s accession to the EU, which will result in changes to the state’s constitution. On the same day, political scientist Natalya Eliseeva told Izvestia that Moldova would face big economic problems if it joined the European Union. Expert Alexander Korinenko, in turn, noted that Moldova has a large number of problems that cannot be combined with the status of a candidate country for joining the European Union. In his opinion, the West is deliberately “giving hope to the Moldovans” in order to “annoy” Russia.
In December 2023, during the EU summit in Brussels, the leaders of the participating countries decided to approve the start of negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova on their accession to the union.
