General Brigadier Isidoro Pastor Román, general director of the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), shared significant advances on the performance and projections of the airport terminal of St. Lucia.
Till the date, AIFA has performed more than 57,000 operationstransporting almost 6 million passengers to various national and international destinations.
On an average day, it handles 16,279 passengers in 144 operations. Currently, it offers 34 routes to destinations within the Mexican Republic and 6 airlines operate international routes to 8 countries.
“When we began operations, on March 21, 2022, we only had six national routes and one international, we had Cancún, Tijuana, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Mérida and Villahermosa. Currently we have 34 national routes, where the main business cities of this country are reflected and the main tourist destinations of our Mexican Republic,” highlighted the director of AIFA.
“As far as international routes are concerned, we have eight destinations, highlighting that last month we began operations to Europe from the city of Sofia, Bulgarito”.
Isidro Pastor Román explained that the AIFA has managed to position itself as a crucial axis for air transport in the country.
The capacity of the terminal building is to handle up to 54 thousand passengers. The cargo terminal has a capacity to handle up to 590 thousand tons of cargo. And the general aviation area, which is where business aviation and private aviation arrive, has the capacity to accommodate the largest aircraft in the world, on the planet.
The AIFA, whose construction began on October 17, 2019 and ended on March 21, 2022, stands as an example of modern and efficient infrastructure.
Built by military engineers at a cost of 75 billion pesos, the airport has two 4.5-kilometer runways, allowing simultaneous operations, a passenger terminal, a cargo terminal, a general aviation terminal and hangars for maintenance. of aircraft.
Cargo operations
An important milestone for the AIFA was the start of its cargo operations on September 1, 2022. This sector has grown exponentially, making the airport the main port of entry for air cargo in Mexico during the last quarter of 2023.
With 40 airlines dedicated to cargo transportation, including 17 regular cargo, 20 charter and 3 mixed (passenger and cargo), the AIFA has mobilized a cumulative total of 383 thousand tons.
“Regular cargo operations began on February 28 of last year with DHL transit from Mexico City airport to ‘Felipe Ángeles’. On September 1 of last year, all of the airlines that were operating in Mexico City airport moved to the ‘Felipe Ángeles’ airport, highlighting that there were only 18 that operated at the AICM,” Pastor highlighted.
Since the last quarter of 2023, AIFA has been the first cargo handling place in the Mexican Airport System, and to date 383 thousand tons have been moved through this airport.
AIFA income
The total cost of the AIFA at the end of the year will amount to 80,324 million pesos, adding 75 billion for construction and 5,324 million in operating expenses.
However, the airport’s total revenue is projected to reach approximately 102.672 million pesos. This figure is broken down into 3,672 million from own income and 99 billion from foreign trade operations at the airport customs.
With these income, the State will not only recover the investment and operating costs, but will obtain a difference in favor estimated at 22,348 million pesos.
The AIFA is not only a pillar in terms of airport infrastructure, but also in the economic development of the country.
Currently, it generates 13,500 direct jobs and more than 110,000 indirect jobs. These jobs not only boost the local economy but also the national one, strengthening air connectivity both nationally and internationally.
AIFA’s strategic vision is to consolidate itself as the main airport in Mexico in the medium term. This objective includes maintaining high levels of safety and quality, as well as continuing to develop a modern and efficient infrastructure for air cargo processing.
The AIFA, with its capacity and projection, is emerging as an essential element for the country’s economic growth, reaffirming its role as a nucleus of connectivity and development in the region.
“How much has the construction and operation of the ‘Felipe Ángeles’ airport cost the public treasury since before its inauguration, when the majority state-owned company ‘Felipe Ángeles’ International Airport, a public limited company with variable capital, was created?” .
“It has cost, including construction, 80,324 million pesos. The operating expenses since 2021 have been 5,324 and it is the sum of these 80,000 with the 75,000 that the construction cost.”
He specified that the income that has been received from customs number 50, which has been operating since September 1, 2022 at the ‘Felipe Ángeles’ airport, is projected to be 99 billion pesos.
Strategic projection
What is the strategic projection of this airport? Isidro Pastor questioned. Consolidate ourselves as the country’s main airport in the medium term, he responded.
Additionally, maintain high levels of safety and quality.
