Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis said yesterday that Europe must host children injured and suffering psychological trauma due to the war in the Gaza Strip as long as the conflict continues.
Gerapetritis is looking for partners in what he hopes will be a project to temporarily transport children to the European Union, and said he discussed the idea with Palestinian Prime Minister Muhammad Mustafa this week.
“We need to confront this tragedy very clearly,” Gerapetritis said.
He added, “Europe must be open to those infected from Gaza, and also to children who are now facing famine or other types of risks.”
Greece was elected to the UN Security Council for 2025 and 2026 this month, and Gerapetritis believes Greece’s historical ties with the Arab world give it credibility to play the role of peace broker.
The minister, who has been in office for a year, did not mention the number of individuals that Greece or the European Union could host, but he said that the matter was under discussion with the Palestinian authorities.
He stressed that the initiative is not linked to regular immigration, which is strongly opposed by the right-wing movement.
