São Paulo, 16 – Tereos’ Director of Sustainability, New Business, Institutional Relations and Sustainability, Felipe Mendes, assessed that ethanol should be essential for the global decarbonization process, but warned that the industry must improve communication to increase the product’s presence in the market. “We need to sell the attributes of ethanol, both to consumers and to the international public. I think Unica (Sugarcane and Bioenergy Industry Union) has been working hard on this, and we have seen results throughout this year, with consumers understanding ethanol better,” he said during the discussion group “Challenges and Paths for Decarbonization in the Sugarcane and Energy Sector,” held this Monday in São Paulo by Tereos.
The opportunities for Brazilian ethanol are even greater when compared to other countries, due to its greater sustainability. “Brazil and our ethanol have a competitive advantage when compared to ethanol produced in the United States or Europe, especially in terms of carbon emissions,” he said.
The executive cited sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as an important alternative to increase global demand for ethanol. “In SAF, ethanol can capture up to 25% of this market. In addition, we have methanol, especially in Europe, where there is already regulation for the use of methanol in marine fuel, while in Brazil we do not yet have this. The blend in Europe is starting at 2% and should reach 10% in the next three years,” he said.
Tereos’ Sustainability Director also mentioned the expected increase in demand for biomethane.
