An elderly couple died this Friday, 3rd, swept away by floods during heavy rain in the city of Bela Vista da Caroba, in the southwest of Paraná. A 69-year-old man and a 65-year-old woman were trying to cross the bridge over a stream in the town of Lajeado Bonito, but the vehicle was washed away. Their son, who was also in the car, survived with injuries and was taken to the hospital.
The son was the one who called emergency services, reporting that he had managed to get out of the car, but had not found his parents. The searches were carried out by the Military Police and the Fire Department, who found the car about a kilometer away from the bridge. The man’s body was found nearby, tangled in the branches of a tree on the other side of the river. The woman’s body was later found, a few meters away.
The southwest of Paraná has been hit by heavy rain since last Thursday, with variations between heavy showers and moments of drizzle. The storms have advanced through the South region.
In Rio Grande do Sul, the situation is even more serious, with 57 deaths already confirmed and 67 people still missing. The lack of water affects 861 thousand properties and the lack of energy affects 350 thousand. In total, 300 of the 497 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul are affected by the storms, with regions such as Vale do Taquari severely damaged. The metropolitan region of Porto Alegre is also being hit hard by floods.
