The left came to power in Colombia. Gustavo Petro, from the Alianza Histórico coalition, won the electoral contest with 11.2 million votes after a hard-fought presidential campaign. Several factors could explain why Colombia chose the left-wing candidate as its new president: wear of the right-wing discourse, desire for change, increased poverty, inequality, polarization, lack of implementation of the Peace Agreement, dissatisfaction and lack of opportunities, among others.
The arrival of Gustavo Petro to power once again changes the political map of Latin America. Historically, Colombia has been the strongest ally that the United States has in the region and has been the point of departure and arrival of Washington’s security policy in it.
What’s coming to Colombia? Will Petro be able to relax the polarization that exists in Colombian society? Could his “policy of love”, based on guaranteeing the basic rights of citizens, political dialogue and the struggle for peace, justice and the protection of ecosystems, be enough to achieve the change that citizens want in terms of economy, poverty and environment? Who will be your allies and how will the opposition behave?
In this edition of El Debate we analyze this historical political turn for Colombia, from the hand of our guests:
