The tourist season in Mallorca has started with several incidents between groups of European tourists under the influence of alcohol. Eight English men were arrested this Wednesday afternoon for participating in a riot on the terrace of a restaurant located on Illetes beach, in the municipality of Calvià. One of the restaurant’s waiters was injured, with a reserved prognosis, and two off-duty Civil Guard agents who were in the premises at that time were also attacked and are awaiting medical evaluation.
The events occurred around 7:30 p.m. on the terrace of a well-known restaurant on Illetes beach, Balneario Illeta, which has tables and chairs at the foot of the sand. There was a group of around 20 English tourists who were celebrating a bachelor’s party. Most of them had booked hotel accommodation in Palma, but they had traveled to Calvià to have drinks at this restaurant.
At a certain point, as explained by the Calvià Local Police, one of the terrace employees caught their attention for their uncivil attitude, since they were throwing cans of beer into the sea and were bothering the rest of the clients on the terrace. the bathers who were on the beach at that time.
The response of the group, which showed they were under the influence of alcohol, was “extremely violent” according to municipal sources. A fight broke out in the middle of the beach, involving tourists and restaurant staff, who tried to pacify the situation. The first to intervene were two off-duty Civil Guard agents who were having something on the terrace at that moment.
During the fight, a waiter at the establishment was injured by a blow to the head and remains hospitalized with a reserved prognosis. The two civil guards were also injured. The bathers and workers of the establishment called the police and a patrol from the Civil Guard and six from the Municipal Police traveled to the beach.
“Rarely has such a violent reaction been seen,” said a spokesperson for the Local Police. The detainees stood up to the agents and tried to flee the beach when they were cornered. The eight arrested spent the night in the Calvià Local Police station. Three of them have been placed at the disposal of the Civil Guard and the rest will do so throughout the day.

Seven people, clients and bathers who were on the beach, have filed a complaint against the arrested people. “We are not going to allow anyone to come here to put the safety of the municipality at risk and damage our image. We are not going to pass them a single one,” said the deputy mayor responsible for Security, Esperanza Català.
Loads in Arenal
It is not the only incident that has been recorded this week with a group of uncivil tourists, with the high season just getting started. On Monday afternoon, the National Police had to use riot gear to break up a group of 200 German tourists under the influence of alcohol, who had caused altercations in a leisure establishment in the El Arenal area of Palma. The events occurred on Monday afternoon when in what is known as Calle del Jamón in the center of Arenal de Palma, where German, Dutch and Austrian tourists are mainly concentrated.
Around six in the afternoon, the group of around 200 German tourists under the influence of alcohol began to create incidents in an establishment, breaking furniture and causing other damage to the place. Those in charge of the premises’ security kicked them out of the establishment, but the group remained outside in front of the establishment, as reported by the National Police. The tension grew and the group attacked one of the workers, who were forced to call the National Police, in command of the Prevention and Reaction Unit, and also the Local Police.
The group of 200 people refused to disband and leave the scene with the arrival of the agents. What’s more, they scolded the police, shouted insults and threw bottles at them. The agents fired shots into the air with the shotguns they use to launch rubber balls until they managed to disperse those present. The Judicial Police group of the Playa de Palma police station of the National Police has opened an investigation to identify the people who participated in the events, clarify what happened and make the relevant arrests.
