Pole vaulter Wilma Murto, who won the European championship, restored joy and faith in Finnish athletics.
Finn after difficult years, athletics got a reason to rejoice, when 24-year-old pole vaulter Wilma Murto exceeded even the wildest expectations by winning the EC gold with a SE score of 485. It had been eight years since Finland’s last EC gold medal, and no less than 20 years since the previous EC women’s medal.
Murto became a champion through difficulties. He became one of the biggest hopes of Finnish athletics already in 2016, when he jumped the under-20 world record. Since then, the pole vaulter’s career has been plagued with injuries and setbacks, which already had time to start talking about yet another wasted talent, but luckily too soon.
In the evening in Munich, Murto struggled with his technique at lower altitudes, but the nervous pressure was triggered when the medal was secured. Suddenly, Murto was like a different person: an athlete who had reached the flow state succeeded in everything and radiated joy and energy far to his surroundings. For a while, sports were magic.
