DHungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is the star of the right-wing populist International. His appearance at the 90th anniversary celebration of the weekly magazine “Weltwoche” in Zurich was celebrated this week. Switzerland’s right-wing conservative elite had gathered at the Grand Hotel Dolder – and some foreign guests such as former Czech President Václav Klaus. Orbán did not give his listeners any concrete instructions, but he did give him a good feeling: “Think twice about whether you want to join the EU,” he said. He also praised Swiss neutrality. Hungary cannot afford this “luxury”: “Switzerland can do it.”
Christoph Blocher, the father of the national conservative Swiss People’s Party (SVP), was also at the event. But his party has just had bad days. While things went quite well for them in the first round of the parliamentary elections on October 22nd, last weekend it became clear that talk of a shift to the right was premature – in fact, strictly speaking, there wasn’t even a shift to the right.
