Federal government authorities arrived this Saturday morning (4) in Canoas, Rio Grande do Sul, to monitor relief and assistance actions for those affected by heavy rains. The delegation will remain in the state until Monday (6).
The group is formed by the ministers of the Social Communication Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic (Secom), Paulo Pimenta; of Integration and Regional Development, Waldez Góes, the president of the National Foundation of Indigenous Peoples (Funai), Joenia Wapichana; the president of the National Supply Company (Conab), Edegar Pretto; and the national secretary of National Assistance, André Quintão.

Late this morning, the ministers traveled to Porto Alegre, where a federal government crisis office will be set up in the coming days in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul to permanently monitor the situation and to facilitate meeting the demands of the municipalities and the state. The setting up of this office was defined in a situation room meeting, in Brasília, this Thursday (2).

Pimenta also informed that the release of R$600 million in amendments to state parliamentarians was authorized. They can allocate these resources to relief actions.

Regarding the food baskets, the president of Conab, Edegar Pretto, informed that they should arrive at the Conab Storage Unit in Canoas, in the next few days, to be distributed to the homeless. The federal government will define the municipalities to be covered, together with the city halls. “We will work in partnership with municipalities and other bodies to meet the emergency demand for food at this first moment”, explained Pretto.
Situation
According to the flood assessment carried out by the State Civil Defense, at 9 am this Saturday (4), the storms affected 281 municipalities. The bulletin points to 56 deaths, 74 people injured and 67 missing. Currently, 8,296 people are temporarily living in shelters in the state and 24,666 people are homeless. In total, around 377.49 thousand people are affected in some way by the rains.
