Ilkka turned 80 in August.
Ilkka had suffered from health problems. He had a serious illness in late October.
Ilkka has been involved in top Finnish sports and sports organizations for more than 40 years. He chaired the Olympic Committee for as many as four terms, from 1988 to 2004.
Ilkka was the chairman of the Finnish Sports Federation (SUL) from 1983 to 1990 and worked as the rector of the Finnish Sports College in Vierumäki from 1976 to 2006.
Last January, Ilkka received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Sports Gala.
HS met Ilkka in good condition in the summer in Vierumäki. He responded to HS’s request for an 80-year-old interview with a laugh and said he would only give it to SUL’s online magazine. Even about the old love of the species.
