At least seven people were killed in landslides caused by torrential rains in a mountainous region of central Ecuador, police in the country said.
Police said that 16 other people were injured, while about 20 people were missing.
Search and rescue operations are continuing in the provinces of Tungurahua and Chimborazo, where heavy rains have caused landslides.
The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration expects an above-normal hurricane season in the Atlantic Basin, extending from June 1 to November 30, due to rising temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean and the expected onset of the La Niña climate phenomenon.
