The Jilin region in eastern China has been isolated due to the spread of the omicron transformation.
China reported on Saturday the first corona deaths in more than a year. According to official data, two people have died of covid-19 disease in eastern Jilin province near the border between North Korea and the Russian region of Primorsk. The British newspaper reports on the matter The Guardian.
Previous corona deaths were reported in China in January last year. Now the dead victims of the virus raise China’s total death toll to 4,638. The omicron variant of the coronavirus has spread rapidly in China. According to health authorities, 2,157 new cases were diagnosed on Saturday, most in the Jilin area.
According to authorities, the province, with a population of 24 million, is completely isolated. A special police permit is required to cross the border or fly to the city of Jilin, which has a population of more than three and a half million.
China has implemented a strict containment policy as well as extensive testing and tracing since the corona pandemic began in Wuhan Province, China in late 2019. Restriction measures have also had popular support.
President Xi Jinping however, seized the opportunity to reduce restrictions in his speech last Thursday. Xi estimates that the restrictions and the costs they entail should be in some proportion to each other.
The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has followed a much looser line of restrictions than China. The total number of corona infections in Hong Kong rose to more than one million on Friday, with nearly five and a half thousand corona deaths in the 7.4 million-strong population during the epidemic.
