Metallica at the Olympic Stadium on Friday 7 June 2024.
“When they come on stage, I get goosebumps, and sometimes tears come to my eyes,” said a fan who has seen Metallica 61 times before the band’s show on Friday In an interview with HS.
Metallica has a steadfast and wide fan base. The last time the band was seen in Finland was in 2018. That’s why the expected Olympic Stadium gigs made the fans smile in advance.
The European tour of the band, which has had a career spanning over 40 years, started in Germany two weeks ago. The current world tour, on the other hand, already started in the spring of 2023.
Metallica is the world’s most successful metal band.
Instead of speed and dangerous situations, Friday’s gig was mostly good-natured playing. The band members were remarkably relaxed on stage, and they exuded the fact that there is nothing left to prove.
The band itself sounded good, and both playing and singing went almost flawlessly. Singer-guitarist James Hetfield still sounds like his iconic badass self.
The band also clearly still enjoyed the attention given by the audience, even though it now had to ask for it by asking for it.
Band performed on the familiar donut-shaped stage from previous tours.
The platform structure with its tall towers looks great, but is not very practical. On the massive stage, the four-member band was spread out on different sides of it, far from each other, although of course they changed places diligently.
The best moments were when some band members, for example the bassist Robert Trujillo and Hetfield, played together with each other for a while.
For the rest of the time, everyone performed as if alone in their own place. It left me missing the mutual interaction of the members.
The gig the general atmosphere was marked by apathy.
The audience was paralyzed in their seats for most of the show, and the band had to work hard to get something out of the audience. In the end, nothing but playing the biggest hits was enough.
Especially in the middle of the gig, the connection between the audience and the band was badly broken.
The gig started strongly with the song Creeping Death. The audience was very involved. Little by little, however, as the gig progressed, the audience’s intensity began to disappear when they heard, for example, Leper Messiah, King Nothing and Too Far Gone?.
Major the reason must be the set list.
Many were clearly expecting to hear the band’s greatest hits, but they were sparsely sprinkled into the set. The biggest hits were only found at the end of the set, when we heard, for example, Seek & Destroy and Master of Puppets.
Perhaps the band’s most famous song by Nothing Else Matters the presentation was also lackluster. Only a few “lit the fuse”.
The band will also perform at the stadium on Sunday. As usual, it plays two consecutive gigs different software. Perhaps the band saved a bigger hit for that day.
“Quite ok”, could be heard from the fans’ post-concert conversations.
So. The years have undoubtedly polished Metallica’s sharpest edge. Nothing helps anymore.
The end result was loud. The gig went smoothly without any major surprises. The biggest of them was probably the one when giant beach balls were dropped from the stage structure poles to sail over the sea of audience.
Also, for example, pyros and rockets were saved for the end of the gig – for the moment when the band’s expected, biggest hits were heard.
