British scientists from Oxford University have started the first clinical trial to evaluate a treatment for monkeypox in humans.
Academics want to assess whether an antiviral drug can help relieve symptoms in infected people, British news agency PA Media reported.
The researchers hope that 500 volunteers from across the UK will participate in the trial to test whether teicovermat, also known as T-Box, can help shorten the length of time people suffer from the disease.
The drug, which was developed to treat smallpox, works by preventing the virus from emerging from an infected cell, which stops its spread within the body.
And the UK health official granted the drug a license, earlier this year, based on the results of preliminary studies conducted on animals and evidence of safety obtained by human volunteers.
