In an article published in the party’s official newspaper, Wang urged major countries to “set an example” in facing multiple challenges, noting China’s enhanced cooperation with Russia in 2022.
“Over the past year, we have continuously explored the correct way for the two major countries, China and the United States, to get along with each other,” he said in the article.
“The two countries should chart a path of compatibility with mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation, and restore Sino-US relations to the right track of safety and stability,” he stressed.
On the Taiwan issue, Wang said it remains “at the heart of China’s core interests” and the “foundation” of the political relationship between China and the United States.
Wang’s time as foreign minister saw a significant increase in tensions between Beijing and Washington on a wide range of issues, from trade to Taiwan.
On Friday, China announced the appointment of Qin Gang, former Chinese ambassador to the United States, as its new foreign minister, replacing Wang, who was widely expected to retain a prominent role in foreign policy after his October promotion to the new Standing Committee of the Communist Party’s Politburo, top decision-making body in the country.
American concern
The US State Department expressed, on Friday, the United States’ concern over China’s support for Russia as the war in Ukraine continues, after Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping held a video meeting.
A spokesman for the ministry said: “Beijing claims neutrality, but its behavior shows that it is still investing in strong relations with Russia,” adding that Washington “monitors Beijing’s activities closely.”
