The president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, received the “Medal of Legislative Merit” on the night of this Monday, 10th, at the Legislative Assembly of the State of São Paulo (Alesp). In a ceremony that was attended by governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), and former governors João Doria and Rodrigo Garcia, two former tucanos, as well as a series of politicians and businessmen, the central banker gave a nod to “whoever makes the country move forward”, saying that he works to give predictability to the private sector.
The presence of financial market professionals at the event was also highlighted by the mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), present at the ceremony, who joked with the audience. “Today we are about to get a loan here,” said the mayor.
With Campos Neto’s term nearing its end, Nunes said it was a “shame” that he would leave the BC. “You leave a legacy for your country, a source of pride for your wife, your children, and for each Brazilian,” he said.
Tarcísio, who hosted a dinner for Campos Neto, also praised the banker, who he describes as his personal friend. According to the governor, the tribute is “more than fair”.
Highlighting Campos Neto’s technical profile, the governor stated that for the BC president “there is no left, there is no right, there is Brazil”.
With the Campos Neto administration at the head of the Central Bank nearing its end, its proximity to the São Paulo administration has put on the radar the possibility of Campos Neto entering politics, together with Tarcísio.
The tribute to Campos Neto was even attended by a PT parliamentarian: state deputy Eduardo Suplicy. “On some occasions when I have seen the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, having a respectful and productive dialogue with him, I feel good and happy,” he stated.
