VideoDue to the new evening lockdown, a visit to the gym or yoga class after 5 p.m. is no longer allowed since Sunday. Fine, but then the cabinet must also offer an alternative, says neuropsychologist Erik Scherder.

He advocates sports or yoga during work hours. “If you impose new labor rules with more working from home, you also have to adjust the circumstances. Especially in this crisis. We already had a pandemic called physical inactivity. That has not yet been solved and the corona crisis is directly related to it,” he tells this site.
A number of people have started to exercise more because of working from home, but a large group has not, according to research. “The latter group started working at home and sat down, which means more corona kilos. This inactivity can lead to a weaker immune system, which we don’t want because you have to keep the risks as small as possible. Hence my cry from the heart for sports during the boss’s time and then without feeling guilty because people go on for an hour longer because of their work ethic and therefore sit even more.”
Most are not sufficiently aware of the effect of sitting in front of a laptop all day, continues the professor at the VU in Amsterdam. “Studies show that this is at the expense of, for example, metabolism and concentration. Anyone who does sports for half an hour in between, trains in the gym or cycles is much more productive.”
Working Conditions Act
An exceptional measure in an exceptional time necessitates doing exceptional things, according to Scherder. According to him, you don’t even have to change that much for that. “If you slightly adjust the law that regulates working conditions (Arbo) and add that employees are allowed to exercise twice for half an hour during working hours, this will not be at the expense of productivity. I’m convinced of that.”
The neuropsychologist argues for the introduction of something similar in schools. Half an hour to three quarters of an hour from the benches is enough, he says. “If children exercise more, they are less likely to become overweight and insulin is absorbed more quickly into the blood. Here too I would like to call on the cabinet: do it now.”
Six million amateur athletes
The evening lockdown also affects amateur sports between 5 pm and 5 am. This worries Lodewijk Klootwijk of the Platform Enterprising Sports Providers (POS). “This affects six million of our athletes; from yoga to martial arts and fitness. We have lost 17 percent of our athletes since the start of the pandemic. They are now being pushed in the wrong direction again, because the vast majority of classes take place after a working day. The question is whether we will ever see these athletes again,” he told NOS.
The POS represents more than 6100 sports providers from seventeen sports. “If you are now an entrepreneur in the sports industry and you see how sport gets people moving and socially connects, then in all honesty you do not understand this measure. As a sports industry we have always been part of the solution, now it feels like we are part of the problem. And that while we exercise safely, close to home and it is expected that it will become very busy at indoor sports locations during the weekends. That does not seem desirable to me.”
