After a harsh defeat in the National Congress and amid criticism from part of the productive sector, the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, defined Brazil as a “trouble” and a “difficult business to manage”. According to the head of the economic team, public figures in positions of power, such as politicians and big businesspeople, sometimes do not do the right thing for the country.
“Sometimes, whoever is in a position of power is not doing the right thing for the country. This is the saddest thing in public life,” said the minister during an event promoted by Institutoconhecimento Liberta (ICL), in São Paulo. “Those who can make a difference are not always thinking about the public interest, and they should be, right? Because he is in a position of power, either because he is a big businessman or because he is a politician with a mandate.”
The minister asked: “aren’t these people thinking about the country?” For him, this is the most difficult thing to deal with in public life. During his speech, Haddad was interrupted by shouts of “Out, Lira”, which came from the audience and made reference to the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL).
The minister also resented what he considered to be a lack of dialogue in the day-to-day life of the federal capital. “When we go to Brasília, we don’t talk to the public service, per se. We go there to defend ourselves from what is happening,” he said.
“At all times, you are apprehensive: what law will they approve? What are they going to do? How crazy is this? What are they talking about? Why don’t they dedicate themselves to serious things that will change people’s lives? Why all this foam to create chaos in society and fights in the family?”, asked Haddad.
This week, the minister suffered his toughest defeat in Congress, in a scenario of growing fiscal distrust and worsening prices of financial assets. On Tuesday, the 11th, the president of the National Congress, senator Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), returned to the government most of the provisional measure that limited the compensation of PIS/Cofins credits and burdened, above all, agribusiness and exporters.
The text, which aimed to compensate for payroll tax relief for the 17 sectors that employ the most in the country and municipalities, angered business leaders, who claim to be bearing the majority of the government’s fiscal adjustment without the Executive doing the homework. home and review your expenses.
Also this week, the Chamber approved urgency for a project that equates abortion carried out after 22 weeks of pregnancy to the crime of homicide, even when the woman has been a victim of rape – in an initiative to confront the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and impose new defeat for the government.
Spending Review Agenda
Amid growing pressure, Haddad and the Minister of Planning and Budget, Simone Tebet, gave a speech on Thursday, the 13th, in defense of the intensification of the review and spending cut agenda, which has not yet come to fruition.
The chorus was reinforced by the acting president, Geraldo Alckmin, and the Minister of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha. This Saturday, in a change of speech, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) also corroborated the message, stating that he is willing to re-discuss government spending.
Lula is in Italy for the G7 meeting, the group of the richest countries in the world, which is made up of Germany, Canada, the United States, France, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom.
The president said he had asked the Minister of the Civil House, Rui Costa, for a meeting of the budget council next week to discuss public expenses. Costa is a member of the Budget Execution Board (JEO), a collegiate also composed of Haddad and ministers Simone Tebet (Planning) and Esther Dweck (Management).
