President Lula's support base celebrates, but the articulation of the deputy supported by Lira is well regarded among congressmen
Chamber governors see the deputy's movement as risky Elmar Nascimento (União Brasil-BA), which organized the release of the deputy Chiquinho Brazão (no party-RJ), arrested on charges of being one of those who ordered the murder of Marielle Franco (Psol-RJ). Despite celebrating the fact that the House kept the congressman in prison, deputies from Lula's base claim that the “protection” from Elmar to the Chamber garnered more support in the race for the presidency of the House.
The Chamber approved the maintenance of Brazão prison on Wednesday (April 10, 2024) by 277 votes in favor and 126 against. The government's victory gave hope to government supporters to win the deputy's position Marcos Pereira (Republicanos-SP) to the succession of Arthur Lira (PP-AL), but Centrão assesses that the vote did not change the scenario in any way.
The vote that kept Brazão arrested was the main topic of Marcos Pereira's birthday party, in a mansion in Lago Sul, an upscale neighborhood of Brasília, held on Wednesday night. The event was attended by both left-wing and right-wing politicians. The president of the Republicans was close to ministers from the Lula administration and the leader of the Government in the Chamber, José Guimarães (PT-CE).
Elmar Nascimento, on the other hand, remained more distant. The deputy spoke with the PL leader at Casa Baixa, Altineu Cortes (RJ), which instructed the main opposition party to vote for Brazão's release. Even with the defeat, Elmar believes that the movement strengthened him in the eyes of deputies from Centrão parties who were undecided about the vote on Wednesday (April 10).
The general assessment, even with the celebrations of those in government, is that the result would be different if the vote had been secret and that Elmar was “brave” to present your position. The reading at the party went further, counting those absent in the vote, the deputies against prison would be the majority.
