Former president Jair Bolsonaro, of the Liberal Party (PL), will decide the candidates for president and vice president of his party in 2026. This is what Valdemar Costa Neto, national president of the party, guarantees in an insert broadcast on TV on Saturday night, 15.
“We want (Jair) Bolsonaro to be a candidate for president of Brazil through PL. Now, if he is not, Bolsonaro will decide who will be the candidate for president. Bolsonaro is the one who decides who will be the vice-presidential candidate”, said Costa Neto in the advertisement. “We owe it to him, he is the one who has the votes. Bolsonaro and the Brazilian people made the PL the biggest party in Brazil.”
The next presidential election is scheduled for 2026, but Jair Bolsonaro is ineligible until 2030, by decision of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE). As right-wing candidacy options, names such as governors Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), from São Paulo, Romeu Zema (Novo), from Minas Gerais, and Ronaldo Caiado (União Brasil), from Goiás, are speculated as successors to the estate election of the former president.
Michelle and Tarcísio emerge as successors to Jair Bolsonaro
In May, a Genial/Quaest survey indicated that Tarcísio de Freitas and former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro (PL) are the most highly rated names to run for command of the federal Executive in place of the former president.
Michelle is considered the best option by 28% of voters interviewed and the governor of São Paulo appears with 24%. Among Bolsonarists, Michelle is the favorite of 41% and Tarcísio, of 33%.
In one of the scenarios simulated by the survey, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) would beat Tarcísio de Freitas in a second round by a narrow margin: 46% to 40%.
