Bobi, the oldest dog in the world, has died at the age of 31 in his home in Conqueiros, a small town near the Portuguese coast. This was confirmed this Monday by the Guinness Record, the world authority in recognizing achievements, which had already distinguished him for his longevity in February. Since then, hundreds of people have visited the dog. Veterinarian Karen Becker wanted to publicly honor him on the social network Facebook: “Despite having outlived all the dogs in history, his 11,478 days on earth would never be enough for those who loved him.”
Leonel Costa, its owner, was only eight years old when he met Bobi. “Unfortunately, at that time it was considered normal by older people who could not have more animals at home. […] burying the animals in a hole so that they would not survive,” the Guinness website collects their testimony. The day after birth Bobi, Leonel’s parents entered the room and took his litter away. But in their haste, they didn’t realize that they had left one behind. “We knew that when the dog opened his eyes, my parents would no longer bury him,” Leonel said.
The dog was registered in 1992 in the Veterinary Medical Service of the Municipality of Leiria (Portugal). He was a purebred Alentejo mastiff, whose life expectancy ranges from 12 to 14 years, according to Guinness. He has broken all records. He was the successor of Spike, a 23-year-old Chihuahua recognized as the oldest dog alive. He has also surpassed another historical figure, the one reached by Bluey, an Australian Shepherd who was born in 1910 and lived to be 29 years old. At the moment, the identity of the dog that can relieve him has not been communicated.
Bobi He was never tied. Becker admits to having asked Costa what the recipe for the dog’s exceptional survival was. “Good nutrition, constant contact with nature, freedom to discover his environment, consistent veterinary care and love,” he responded. “Between a can of animal food or a piece of meat, Bobi “He doesn’t hesitate and chooses our food,” its owner told Guinness.
The dog only had one serious health problem in 2018, when he was admitted with breathing difficulties, but the symptoms subsided and he felt well again. Before his death, he did have trouble walking and his eyesight had deteriorated.
In Portugal, this breed is known as Rafeiro do Alentejo and was originally linked to the aristocracy because it was the guard dog of the richest people. They are mixed breed shepherds. His build is big and strong. For this reason, they are characterized by being territorial, loyal to their masters and distrustful of strangers. Their temperament is calm and they stand out for their good relationship with children, due to their protective nature with the pack. In addition, they are not dogs prone to diseases. Bobi It is the last of a long generation of animals. His mother lived to be 18 years old and another dog Costa had did not die until he was 22.
