Swimming beaches|A poison ivy has been observed near the swimming beaches of Pikkukoski, Pakila and Tapaninvainio.
Helsinki In the vicinity of Pikkukoski, Pakila and Tapaninvainio beaches, a toxic poison ivy has been found in the reeds next to the beach areas, informs the Culture and Leisure Department of the City of Helsinki.
All parts of the poison ivy contain kikutoxin, which is very toxic. Luontoportti database according to Myrkkykeiso, the most dangerous plant in Finland.
The growing areas of poison ivy are demarcated in these areas with caution tapes, which also have signs warning about the plant.
However, according to the city of Helsinki, the presence of poison ivy in the vicinity of the beaches in question does not limit swimming there, as exposure to the plant’s toxins through bathing water alone is unlikely. The poison of the plant is located in the plant liquid and if the plant is intact, the poison cannot spread.
However, you must not touch or eat the poison ivy. If it comes into contact with bare skin, the contact area should be washed thoroughly for 10–15 minutes. If the plant has been swallowed, you should immediately seek hospital treatment, the release states.
Swimming beaches for the staff, the beach season lasts until August 11 on the beaches in question, but the water quality of the beaches will be monitored until the end of August. After that, it is possible to remove toxic deposits from coastal areas.
“Destroying poison ivy is quite challenging, because there shouldn’t even be root fragments left in the ground, from which the plant can grow again in the coming years. In any case, the growth of the poison ivy must be monitored in the coming years as well, because it is a persistent devil,” says the team leader of Helsinki’s swimming beaches Jukka Lundgren.
Poison ivy resembles a daisy in appearance. What distinguishes poison ivy from dogwood is its place of growth, because poison ivy grows in yards and roadsides, while poison ivy typically grows in shallow coastal waters of lush waterways. The poison ivy blooms in July-August and its height is 30–150 centimeters.
