Gabonese attacker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Arsenal have terminated the player’s contract with the London football club by mutual consent, the club announced on Tuesday. This clears the way for the striker to make a switch to FC Barcelona.
The Spanish press reported Monday that Aubameyang in Spain is likely to sign a six-month contract with an option for another year. It is still waiting for an official statement from the Catalans.
,,Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has left the club by mutual consent. We wish ‘Auba’ all the best for the next chapter of his career and thank him for his contribution to our club,” Arsenal wrote in a statement.
The 32-year-old attacker, who was under contract until June 2023, has not played for the Gunners since he was punished by the club last December for failing to show up for training. He therefore had to hand in his captain’s armband.
In mid-January, Aubameyang also had to deal with heart problems during the Africa Cup after a recent corona infection. According to the medical committee of the African Football Association CAF, heart defects were found during examination.
Aubameyang, who moved from Dortmund to Arsenal for €60 million in January 2018, has scored 92 goals in 162 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners. The striker, 2015 African Footballer of the Year, played for AC Milan, Dijon, Lille, Monaco and Saint-Etienne before signing for Borussia Dortmund in 2013.
