A Anac (National Civil Aviation Agency) authorized “exceptional operation” for the removal of aircraft from Salgado Filho International Airport, in Porto Alegre. The planes were stranded because of flooding, as a result of the heavy rains that hit Rio Grande do Sul last month.
The planes began to be removed this Saturday (June 8, 2024). It is planned to remove 9 of the 47 aircraft that were trapped at the site. The airport suspended operations on May 3 due to flooding of the entire airport complex, including the runways and passenger lounge.
A special authorization from Anac is necessary due to the suspension of operations at the airport, which must remain closed until December at least, according to the concessionaire Fraport Brasil, responsible for Salgado Filho. To do this, it is necessary for the companies and individuals responsible for the planes to adhere to a liability agreement.
Pick-up must be carried out at times pre-defined by Fraport Brasil in conjunction with the air traffic service, according to Anac. The agency reinforced that, according to an ordinance published last month, the operations of the Porto Alegre airport will be suspended for “undetermined time”.
“The transfer of aircraft on an exceptional basis does not allow the airport to be released for commercial flights with passengers”said Anac, in a note.
This week, with the waters of the Guaíba River receding, work began on cleaning of airport facilities. Fraport Brasil informed that it has also started carrying out tests and surveys to assess the soil’s resistance, which should last at least 45 days.
Since the end of May, commercial flights have been authorized to operate from Canoas Air Base, in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre.
