Amsterdam is very concerned about the arrival of conspiracy theorist David Icke to a demonstration in the capital. The Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) has been asked to investigate whether he can be refused entry at the national border. The IND told Nieuwsuur on Wednesday evening to take the municipality’s request “seriously” and to investigate whether it is possible to refuse Icke.
According to the Amsterdam triangle, consisting of the police, the Public Prosecution Service and mayor Femke Halsema, with the arrival of Icke to Dam Square on November 6, ‘the dignity of the monument on Dam Square is at stake’. This is because of the social unrest to which his eventual arrival would lead. Icke’s previous anti-Semitic statements have been qualified as ‘deeply hurtful and unacceptable’.
Amsterdam says that the triangle makes a ‘heavy appeal’ to the organization of the demonstration to withdraw the invitation to Icke and to move to another place in the city.
On Tuesday, almost the entire city council announced that they don’t want British conspiracy theorist David Icke to speak on the demonstration. It is organized by an alliance of clubs under the umbrella name ‘Samen voor Nederland’. Demonstrations of ‘Together for the Netherlands’, which regularly include speakers from Forum for Democracy, are more often in the news because of the spread of anti-Semitic conspiracy theories.
Holocaust denier
For that reason, the Center for Information and Documentation Israel (CIDI) also wants the controversial British conspiracy theorist David Icke to be banned from the demonstration on Dam Square. According to the CIDI, Icke is an anti-Semite and a Holocaust denier.
Because the right to demonstration and freedom of expression are enshrined in the Constitution, it is not possible for the triangle to prohibit Icke from speaking in advance, once he is in the Netherlands.
Illegal acts
It is pointed out, however, that the Public Prosecution Service will act if he is guilty of criminal offenses during a speech. “Any speech will be closely monitored by the public prosecutor to assess whether criminal statements are being made.”
The triangle also monitors public order around the demonstration and will, ‘if possible and necessary, move it or otherwise act’.
Since the 1990s, Icke has been propagating a conspiracy theory that claims that humanity is secretly ruled by so-called reptilians, a powerful group of alien reptiles masquerading as humans. According to critics, the reptiles are a metaphor for a (partly Jewish) elite who form an all-powerful secret world government and are active in all walks of life. Icke’s reptile theory has recently been proclaimed several times by FVD leader Thierry Baudet.
