He President Andrés Manuel López Obrador He left the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), a mythical leftist party in Mexico that supported him twice for the presidency of the country, with the aim of form a new political group from left: Brunette.
López Obrador belonged to the ‘Progressive Movement’ coalition, which was made up of the PRD, the Citizen Movement (MC) and the Labor Party (PT), which nominated him twice for the Presidency of the Republic in 2006 and 2012. However, due to differences he resigned.
As a member of the Aztec Sun Party, López Obrador was a candidate for the governorship of Tabasco, its national leader, head of Government of the then Federal District.
Although the PRD supported him at key moments in AMLO’s life, such as the reform protest in 2006, he renounced his militancy to found the National Regeneration Movement party (Morena), which has established itself as the leading force. politics of the country.
The separation
On September 9, 2012before thousands of supporters gathered in the Plaza de la Constitución, the current president announced his departure from the PRDa party in which he played for 23 years, ensuring that it was not a breakup.
“In this new stage of my life, I am going to dedicate all my imagination and work to the cause of the transformation of Mexico; I will do so from the space that Morena represents, for this reason I will separate myself from the parties of the Progressive Movement.”
He recognized and thanked the left-wing parties, without the presence of Jesús Zambrano, national leader of the Aztec Sun, López Obrador maintained that he gave his best to the PRD, for which he assured that “it is at hand and at peace.” with the political institute.
“This is not a breakup, I say goodbye in the best terms; I separate myself from the progressive parties with my deepest gratitude to their leaders and activists. I have many friends in the PRD who at all times gave me their trust and support, in return I gave them the best of me and represented them with dedication and dignity, we are even and at peace.”
Another reason that led to the separation was that The PRD joined the Pact for Mexicoan initiative that united the Peña Nieto government with the National Action (PAN) and the Institutional Revolutionary (PRI) parties.
The objective of the Pact for Mexico was the approval of a series of reforms, including energy reforms, of which López Obrador was against.
Today, the panorama facing the PRD is dark. In the elections on Sunday, June 2, the party did not reach the 3 percent of the vote required to continue as a political party, therefore, the National Electoral Institute (INE) notified it that it would disappear.
Thus, after a 35-year history as the Mexican left and having governed 21 entities in the country, the party of the Aztec sun disappears after losing its national registration although it remains alive at the local level in 12 states: Aguascalientes, Baja California Sur, Michoacán, State of Mexico, Oaxaca, Tabasco, Tlaxcala, Zacatecas, Sonora , Guerrero and San Luis Potosí and Mexico City.
“What the PRD did is important, I want to talk about it now because it is in a difficult phase. His leader has just said that the PRD cycle is over,” the president announced in his La Mañanera conference this Monday, June 17.
He recognized that this party played an important role, since it avoided the “bipartisan pretension”, being an institution that arose from the people, from electoral fraud and from many people who gave their lives and fought for just causes.
