Her film list was long. She was not only in front of the camera, but also behind it. Now actress Vera Chekhova has died.
Berlin – The green eyes were her trademark. Vera Tschechowa received the Federal Film Prize in 1962 for the Böll film adaptation “The Bread of the Early Years”. In her decades-long film and television career, she appeared in almost 100 roles from the 1950s to the 1990s. She then also stood behind the camera as a director. There were also numerous engagements at major German theaters.
Now Vera Chechowa is dead. She died on Wednesday (April 3) at the age of 83, the Ute Nicolai agency told the dpa in Berlin on Thursday, citing the family.
Actress Vera Tschechowa – she played Heinz Erhardt’s daughter in “Widower with Five Daughters”.
Chekhova originally wanted to become a stage designer. She learned the craft of acting in Berlin and Munich. Chechowa began her film career in 1956 as Heinz Erhardt's film daughter in “Widower with Five Daughters”. She played her first leading role in 1957 in “Still a Minor” alongside Paula Wessely. She later appeared in a number of films and television films. For example in:
- “Screams of the Night” (1969)
- “Cancer Ward” (1970)
- “Desperado City” (1981)
- “Bluebeard” (1984)
- “The Rush of Transformation” (1988).
Acting was in her genes, so to speak. Because both her mother and her grandmother were actresses. The poet Anton Chekhov was her great-granduncle.
Elvis Presley and Vera Chekhova – He bought out an entire theater performance
An anecdote also linked her to none other than Elvis Presley. The young Chekhova was once brought to a photo shoot with Elvis when he was stationed as a US soldier in Bad Nauheim. Much later there was an encounter with the “King”: When Chekhova was playing a theater in Munich, she heard that a single man had bought the entire performance. And so Elvis sat in the hall, his feet on the backrest and without understanding a word, as Chekhova reported with amusement. She didn't elaborate on Presley's courtship.
Chekhova was married to the entrepreneur Peter Paschek for several decades, and their son Nikolaus Glowna is a film composer. Recently, the death of comedian legend Joe Flaherty also caused great sadness. He starred in “Back to the Future” and “Police Academy.” (mbr with dpa/AFP)
