Yesterday, a large-scale landslide struck more than six towns in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, killing at least three people, at a time when local officials reported that the disaster may have led to the burial of many homes and caused a large number of victims.
The incident occurred in remote areas of Enga State at approximately 3:00 local time, and the state’s governor, Peter Ipatas, said that the disaster caused “human and material losses” amid unconfirmed reports that hundreds of people were buried as a result.
Ipatas said that “more than six towns” were involved in the landslide, describing the situation as “an unprecedented natural disaster that caused enormous damage.”
Scenes filmed at the scene showed the collapse of a large rock cliff and soil from Mount Mongalo hill, which was covered with dense vegetation. Rock rubble, uprooted trees, and mud were spread along a path leading to the valley, and the ruins of tin housing were seen among the rubble resulting from the landslide.
