A 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Tonga archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean on Monday, the US Geological Survey announced.
The earthquake occurred at 9:47 am local time (20:47 GMT Sunday) at a depth of about 112 kilometers, according to the US Geological Survey, and at a distance of less than 200 kilometers north of Nuku’alofa, the capital of the Tonga archipelago.
There were no immediate reports of damage in Tonga.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that the earthquake, which occurred near the sparsely populated islands of Kau and Tofua, is not expected to cause high tsunami waves.
