Military cooperation would increase the credibility of the defense of both countries.
Finland and Sweden are both non-aligned countries whose security environment changed radically after Russia invaded Ukraine. Finland and Sweden are already on the western front after providing aid to Ukraine and participating in the EU’s massive sanctions against Russia.
Finland and Sweden have already chosen their sides, but they are not part of the common European defense solution, ie NATO. The ongoing war in Europe and the unpredictability of Russia make it difficult to apply right now.
Instead, Finland and Sweden could join forces and ally. A joint air and naval force would serve the interests of both countries and increase their efficiency. Ships and planes could be deployed over a wider area, bringing depth to the defense. The ground forces also have a lot of opportunities to increase mutual cooperation. Finnish troops could be stationed in Gotland, for example, and Swedish troops could also be stationed in Finland on a permanent basis.
An alliance would increase the credibility of the defense of both countries and raise the threshold for a possible attack. In the future, Finland and Sweden could apply for NATO membership together if they so wish.
