Nuevo León.- The drought in Nuevo León would cause the loss of 50% of quality cattlethat is, some 300 thousand heads affected due to the lack of rain and the reduction of groundwater in the state.
The president of the Regional Livestock Union of Nuevo León, Adrián de la Garza Tijerina, warned that the grasslands of the entity are practically dryand that in case of not improving, many ranchers will have to sell their cattle to avoid mortality and greater economic loss.
“It will depend on the resistance capacity of each ranch,” he said, “but if a severe drought like the one in 2012, 50 percent of the 600,000-head herd that we have in the entity would have to be sold to ranches in other states that are in better climatic conditions than ours,” explained the rancher leader.

“And the most important thing is not so much the quantity but the quality of the cattle that are being sold,” he added, “because almost 95 percent of the cattle are of export quality.”
“From the frost of a few weeks ago, and that affected places where there were still green pastures, many farmers are already thinking about the decision to sell“.
The lack of grassland The cost of raising cattle has also skyrocketed, he said, as ranchers are having to buy bales of grass to feed their cattle.
He added that this situation is complicated by the lack of water to give the cattle to drink.
José Luis Tamez, representative of the Regional Union of Pig Farmers of Nuevo León, said, in turn, that the lack of water will cause problems for production.
“In livestock the situation is more critical that with us, for now,” he acknowledged, “because they are already selling cattle of all races and ages.
In the case of crops, farmers from the entity revealed that they are already suffering a 30 percent reduction in the availability of subsoil water for irrigation.
The most serious thing, they stressed, is that the problem arises just when the sowing of peppers, tomatoes, zucchini and other vegetables began this month, mainly in the municipality of Cadereyta.
Fermín Montes Cavazos, farmer and former federal delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture (Sader), pointed out that the outlook is critical, since these new crops will require irrigation, which will lead to a greater depletion of the wells.

“In the municipalities of Montemorelos, Terán, Linares, Allende, Santiago and Cadereyta we must bring 30 percent less water availability,” he warned, “so that, if there are no early rains, I don’t see them, over there April we are going to be suffering severely in agriculture”.
