Fabio Tamburini (Director Il Sole 24 Ore) Sergio Mattere President of the Republic Mario Draghi President of the Council
Both at the Quirinale and at Palazzo Chigi the country needs continuity
Journalist and writer, Fabio Tamburini since 2018 he is director of The sun 24 hours, Radiocor And Radio24. In his series of interviews with colleagues who lead the main national newspapers, Italian business he met him to discuss a race at the Quirinale which is now close to unveiling the winner. The political path, as always made up of maneuvers and agreements between the protagonists, does not always go hand in hand with the common feeling of citizens. It is also revealed by a careful look like that of Tamburini, perfectly trained to examine the practical consequences of political and economic intertwining. Unlike many insiders, excited about this challenge, the director de The sun 24 hours he sees things from another angle: “Frankly, I am more on the side of ordinary citizens: the election of the President of the Republic is an important step in the life of the country, but one cannot exaggerate. There are many problems of great importance: forgetting them is a serious mistake “.
Can you help us to remind the political class?
“From a general point of view, there is the application of the NRP, which still has to overcome some great obstacles. Then there are the refreshments, because the pandemic is far from over: the general picture remains positive, but there are sectors heavily affected. And bills, which represent a serious problem for both companies and families ”.
On the latter issue, moreover, don’t you think that we had to act in advance, given that the causes of the energy crisis had been known for some time?
“Exactly”.
Which political scenario would be desirable to effectively intervene on these problems?
“You have to look at things as a whole. The decisions on the Presidency of the Republic and on the leadership of the Government must go hand in hand “.
But in which direction?
“Never change a winning team: I would not have even a shadow of a doubt about the confirmation of Sergio Mattarella at the Quirinale and Mario Draghi at Palazzo Chigi. It would be the best solution for the country. Mattarella has shown that he is up to the role and therefore deserves to be confirmed, asking him to make the sacrifice of remaining at the Quirinale. As for the Government, the opinion is extraordinarily positive. Draghi has achieved very significant results, the country travels with the wind blowing in the sails. Interrupting this virtuous path would be a mistake “.
But the two directly involved seem to have other projects …
“I believe they need to be pushed towards a solution coram populo. And if this is not possible – but only as an extreme case – other options could be considered “.
Or which ones?
“If Draghi remained at the helm of the government, we could look for an alternative to Mattarella for the Presidency of the Republic: since there are so many candidates, I believe that the right person could be found, without too many problems”.
Isn’t there a name you prefer to others?
“No, I would say that there are a good number of figures that could be fine”.
What if Draghi no longer wants to stay at Palazzo Chigi?
“Rather than losing him, it would have meant taking him to the Quirinale … but only how extrema ratio“.
Who could replace him for the Presidency of the Council, with the prospect of having only one year in office, before the elections?
“It’s a choice that resembles climbing Everest … Also in this case there are many names and I prefer not to mention just one, because I find it premature. We will really see at the last moment, but I repeat: Never change a winning team, so I would stick to Draghi and Mattarella in their current roles ”.
