Spanish league and Champions League holders Real Madrid ended their pre-season tour of the United States on Tuesday with a 2-1 win over English club Chelsea, while compatriots Barcelona lost 4-3 on penalties to Italian club AC Milan after a 2-2 draw.
A crowd of 62,617 turned out at the Carolina Panthers’ home stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, to watch Brazilian Vinicius Junior make his first start in Real Madrid’s pre-season fixtures, before they begin their La Liga title defence in 12 days and face Italian side Atalanta in the European Super Cup on Wednesday.
Midfielder Dani Ceballos gave the capital side the lead in the 19th minute with a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner of the goal.
Moroccan international Ibrahim Dias doubled his team’s lead in the 27th minute with a left-footed shot from a difficult angle on the left side inside the penalty area.
Striker Noni Madueke reduced the deficit with a header from the right from close range in the 39th minute, but Chelsea were unable to equalise.
In another friendly, Milan and Barcelona drew 2-2 in Baltimore, before the Italian team won 4-3 on penalties.
Serbian striker Luka Jovic opened the scoring in the 10th minute, after a decisive pass from American Christian Pulisic, who returned and scored his team’s second goal with a shot from a difficult angle from the left side that settled in the upper right corner of the goal in the 15th minute.
Polish Robert Lewandowski responded with two goals in the 22nd and 58th minutes.
